Although still in alpha, Football Manager 2.3 is already available for PC, and it features a multitude of fixes and improvements over the previous title. In addition to the usual tweaks, there's editorial performance improvements for senior staff, a redesigned Inbox, improved international scouting, and the option to add in-depth video analysis analysis of players. There are plans to bring all the tinkering to consoles soon, but for now, PC is the best place to get in on the ground level.

Football Manager has weathered plenty of changes since it started out 20 years ago. But that doesn't mean it's not getting a welcome one, as last month's big introduction confirmed: SMG has revealed big plans for Football Manager 2014, which will include 360, PS3, and of course PC, to debut in January 2014.

The announcement was made through Football Manager’s Twitter account, which is usually the last resort for bad news. After the distasteful launch of the Dead Island 2 sequel, Crackdown 3 PS4 delay, and Alanah Pearce stripping her top off for an audience of thousands, it was almost too much to take in. What's Football Manager doing calling its own announcement account? Oh, it's just following the Football Manager radio show, which will be carrying on for more than a month! At least now we know what's going on.

My first reaction was of course outrage. What is the publisher doing? It's just pushing out a new beta demo onto a shiny new website, nothing more. That was my first reaction. But a couple of days later, a message arrived from the FM team explaining what was really going on. "We have today made the very exciting announcement of next generation Football Manager. We are very proud to be able to say that FM 2014 will be coming to PS3, X360 and PC next January. You will be able to download your copy through the United Kingdom, Europe, North America and South America versions of the game in August next year."
